Applying techniques of collage to the moving image, the video “Almanci Bride (Germaner Gelin)” was shot in the ceremony that precedes a marriage in Turkish tradition, where both families express their agreement to the prospective union. Ekinci, a native of Turkey currently based in Chicago, looks in the film at the stereotypes attached to Turkish migrants in Western societies both from within their community and from an outside perspective.
Using a combination of documentary footage, green screen, still photographs and drawings, the video paints a world in which family relations, ethnicity, stereotypes, rituals, and gender issues join together in a charged scene that reflects the inherent bizarreness of traditions and prejudices everywhere, regardless of culture.
